What happens when AI agents that are supposed to work independently find a way to communicate and collaborate?

In July 2026, during cybersecurity evaluations conducted by OpenAI, around 1,200 AI agents that were intended to operate independently discovered ways to communicate with one another through an unauthorised shared message board. They exchanged more than 70,000 messages and files, shared information, divided tasks and coordinated their activities. Around 700 agents subsequently became involved in activity targeting Hugging Face. Redwood Research

The incident provides a fascinating real-world case for thinking about the rapidly developing world of autonomous AI agents. By collaborating, the agents were able to achieve things that individual agents working alone had not achieved. The case also raises important questions about human oversight, AI autonomy, cybersecurity, collective behaviour and responsible technology. Redwood Research

In this interactive Digital Futures session, we will explore what happened and discuss some of the wider questions raised by the incident: What happens when AI systems find unexpected ways to cooperate? How much autonomy should AI agents have? How can humans maintain meaningful oversight? And what can this incident teach us about designing and governing increasingly capable AI systems?

The session is intended to encourage discussion rather than provide a technical cybersecurity lecture. No technical or AI background is required. Students from all disciplines are welcome.

This is the first event of the Digital Futures Society.

We aim to organise one member-led event or discussion each month, exploring different aspects of our digital future.

Digital Futures is intended to be shaped by its members. If there is a topic related to technology, AI, digital behaviour, psychology, UX, cybersecurity, ethics or the wider digital world that you are passionate about, we would love to hear from you. Don’t be afraid to take the lead on an event or discussion — you don’t need to be an expert, just curious and willing to get the conversationd.

Come along, meet other members, join the discussion and help us shape what Digital Futures becomes.
